Mission Driven

In the action sports arena, Comet is an undisputed leader in social and environmental responsibility. That "B Corporation" logo above represents our commitment to these principles. All B Corporations are purpose-driven and create benefit not just for company owners, but for employees, the community, and the environment.

___________

B Corporations are businesses that have agreed to a comprehensive evaluation and have amended their bylaws to adopt standards addressing social and environmental responsibility. We were stoked to be one of the earliest founding B Corporations, which in a couple years has now grown to nearly 200 businesses spanning over 30 industries. B Corporation certification helps distinguish Comet from the growing barrage of green-washing and cause-marketing campaigns.

This is a critical point in history. National and global policies are too slow to change and, frankly, big business has too much investment in our political structure for any of us to sit back and think everything is gonna be all right. Comet is charging forward. We're creating a clear path that we hope other businesses will follow. If you agree with this path, ask questions and inspire other businesses to be excellent stewards of our one planet and one collective society. Let the businesses that you buy from know that you want them to do the right thing. Good businesses listen to their customers.

As a B Corporation, we embed our values into our corporate governing documents so they can survive new investors, new management and even new ownership. Comet Skateboards will only have a growing positive impact as we grow our sales. We thank you for buying our products and spreading the word. Every $ helps us fight the good fight.

B Corporations help you tell the difference between a “good company” and just good marketing. Find other B Corporations or learn more at BCorporation.net.

Community Designed

Welcome to a new era for skateboarders everywhere.
Comet has begun the first community-driven skateboard design process by inviting you to develop the shape, graphics, and name of our new products. The result is a growing line of products that harnesses your collective wisdom and stoke.

___________

Comet has always been community focused. Through constant communication with riders of all types and sizes, we've carved out a broad selection of decks from street to downhill and everything in between. Over the years, we've tweaked these designs based on your feedback. Big ups to Jeff McDonough, Blake Smith, Nick Lee, and Justin Bryant, who have contributed lots to Comet over the years and thanks to justin dubois for keeping it Pagan and adding the newest selection to our board line up. Everyone's feedback has played a part in shaping our boards and inspiring the diversity of our products. Check out our store and you'll likely find your perfect ride.

If you DON'T... then tell us what you want. If the community is stoked on it, we'll make it happen. That's what our process is about. It began in late 2008 when JP Kaloi asked us if we could make him a Voodoo Speed board an inch longer and wider. We agreed and put the idea out to the greater community. After extensive input and feedback on the Comet blog and the Silverfish Longboarding forum we released the Voodoo XL... the first skateboard revision that was driven entirely by the community.

That kick-started a new era for Comet. In Jan 2009, skateboarder Nick Grasso asked us if we would be interested in designing a "funtime freeride" deck. Within 3 weeks Comet answered with a new mold and shape. 15 test pilots stepped up to ride and offer detailed suggestions -- over 75 pages -- for how to improve the deck. Comet posted this feedback online for further feedback from the greater community. Over 1000 posts later from people all over the world produced this revolutionary downhill skateboard that promises to influence skateboarding for years to come. It didn't end there. The community then offered dozens of names and graphics, ultimately deciding on the name FSM, the colors Purple and Yellow, and two thematically different graphics.

Comet will be re-designing its existing product line and every new product release through this community design process. Because we manufacture everything ourselves, we can deliver what the community wants within weeks of ideation. This process is fast. We invite you to inspire us. If the community is stoked on it, we'll make it and build it right.

Green Manufacturing

Our manufacturing decisions are guided by the concept of "Cradle to Cradle" (C2C) as developed by William McDonough and Michael Braungart. C2C eliminates the concept of waste through "closed loop" manufacturing, which examines the entire life-cycle of all products and bi-products of the system.

___________

Closed loop manufacturing strategies consider what happens to a product at the end of its life and what happens to all bi-products of the manufacturing process. Comet uses materials that can safely biodegrade at the end their use. The key to biological design is that sourcing is done in balance with what the earth can provide and that the bi-products and used products can safely degrade and fertilize the next generation of raw materials for us to source. This system stays intact when the next generation is considered first and foremost.

Where most manufacturers go wrong is in the mistake of combining two incompatible C2C material categories. In closed-loop C2C manufacturing, there are two categories of materials: biological and technical. Biological materials are organic. Comet uses biological materials with our closed-loop process described above. Technical materials are special synthetics that can exist perpetually in a manufacturing environment much in the way glass can be melted down to its purest form and recast into a new product. Unlike standard recyclable plastics, C2C technical materials will not degrade with each cycle.

If you combine technical and biological materials into one “monsterous hybrid”, it can no longer survive in a closed-loop manufacturing process. If you return your broken skateboard to the manufacturer, they cannot safely melt it down and recast it if it has biological materials in it, nor can they chip it up and safely compost it if there are technical materials in it. In a typical manufacturing situation bi products of manufacturing and products at the end of their life are thrown in the trash where they will be shipped to a landfill and persist for tens of thousands of years. When you throw something away, a fair question to ask is, "Where is away?"

Comet's Action Steps:
∞ Renewable energy
∞ FSC-certified hardwoods
∞ Low VOC water-based clear coat
∞ Water-based inks
∞ Zero formaldehyde glues
∞ Renewable biocomposites
∞ Regional supply chain
∞ Compost or repurpose all scrap

Ride your Comet skateboard with a clear conscience. When it has lived its life to the fullest, send it back to us. We will return your ride safely to the Earth and give you $5 toward your next purchase of any Comet board.

Performance Composites

Comet has a long history of developing skateboards with the highest performing composite materials on the planet. After years of pioneering fiberglass and carbon fiber decks, Comet has joined up with e2e Materials and embarked on the path of unlocking the true potential of natural biocomposite materials.

___________

Instead of synthetic fiber, we use annually renewable natural fiber from plants such as jute, flax, and kenaf. We then bond these fibers together with a soy-based resin forming a super strong biocomposite.

Comet boards are pressed one at a time in our own factory using proprietary molds. Each board is then shaped and carefully tuned to the perfect specs to suit its purpose.

e2e Materials and Comet are committed to continuous R&D to yield the strongest, lightest, fastest boards on the planet for years to come.
